Atriplex and Cypress - A Tribute to Grandpa

My Grandparents were all gone by the time I was 19. That is what happens when your parents get married "late" and are the youngest in their families. I have cousins who have children my age (or even older than me). By marriage, I have inherited three new Grandparents (Grandpa H. was gone before I joined the family). Grandma and Grandpa S. live on a wonderful farm in the Riverbottoms in Provo, the last Eden in the midst of huge development. Grandpa has donated his land to the City of Provo for a park. They still live in the home and upon their death it will be turned into a facilities and maintenance office. Jeremy (and certainly other progeny) occassionally get upset that the land and other worldly posessions will be passed along to others outside the family but Grandpa feels this is the best way to protect his land and heritage... and Cypress trees. Hopefully the city will not feel the need to undermine the contract and sell to developers in the future. We'll see!




This is already a long post, but I wanted to tribute Grandpa a bit. He celebrated his 90th birthday Sunday with the help of hundreds of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The farm is a favorite gathering place and Craig's family will hold their family reunion there this weekend following the return home of his youngest child, Ben, from the strange and exotic mission field of London. Jeremy and I are on the reunion committee this year but I am only slightly stressed. I'll post pictures of that next week! In the meantime, here's a photo of Grandpa S; a PhD, a Democrat, a philanthropist, a tree-hugger, a farmer, a Bishop, a Patriarch, a grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather (along with his wife's namesake, Millie):
