Last Thursday, April 17, 2008, Aunt Ila passed away. She had been living with her son, Wayne in Georgia. Her body was transported to Bakersfield, where she will be buried on Tuesday. Grandma Stutz regrets that it will not be possible for her to attend the funeral. Uncle Ward, Ila's husband, was two years younger than Grandma. He passed away in 1993.
Grandma wrote a short biography of Uncle Ward and Aunt Ila, and published in her book, "Across the Millennia" in 2005. Below is an excerpt of that biography.
Ila Jeanne Stoddard was the daughter of a long time friend of Grandma Sepha Robison. Ila’s mother had given birth to twin boys and, when she found out she was pregnant with another child, was worried because she did not know how she would cope with three babies. One day Grandmother Sepha said, “Well, Sadie, if you don’t want another baby I’ll take it.” Of course Sadie would never think of giving her baby away and I am not sure that Grandmother Sepha was ready to take on another child.
When Ila Jean was born everyone kidded Sadie about having “promised” to give the baby to Grandmother Sepha.
Years later when Ward and Ila were in their twenties they did, indeed, get married and lived a long and happy life together.
Uncle Ward was wounded while serving as a Marine during World War II in the Pacific Front. He received the purple heart and was sent back to the States for hospitalization. After being released from the hospital, and before he rejoined his battalion, he and Aunt Ila were married. They had a happy wedding and reception including a hay ride from Delta to Sutherland where a band was waiting for the wedding party.
Uncle Ward and Aunt Ila moved to Bakersfield after the war and that was their home for the rest of their lives. They bought a mattress factory which brought him good income. They were active in the church and spent their last years working in the temple. They had four children: Scott, Judy, Jeanne and Wayne. Uncle Ward and Aunt Ila raised a good family. They celebrated their fiftieth anniversary with several hundred friends and relatives in attendance to share their love.
Our love and prayers are with the families of our cousins, and with Grandma Stutz, who is surviving all others of her generation.
